NaNoWriMo Special – Introduction

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

In 1999 a bunch of young men had a weird idea: Can we write a novel in just a single month?

They knew it was a silly idea. They had no experience in writing. No classes. No clue. No plot.

The only definition: It had to have 50,000 words.

But they did it anyway. They loved books, they loved the idea of being a novelist – and so they just went and did it, and almost by accident, started a worldwide movement.

By now, NaNoWriMo is a huge event, with millions of participants.

The first time around, they did it in July. And of 21 participants, six crossed the finishing line.

All discovered a lot about themselves and writing. Continue reading

Writers’ Block – Conclusion

There's a new world waiting

There’s a new world waiting.

I hope I could show you that there are many, many “good” reasons for you to feel blocked when you want to write. And even though all those reasons are “in the mind”, they don’t mean you’re lazy or mad. Not at all.

They are real, and they have been brought up by your own dreams and goals. They are an essential part of your personal hero’s journey.

In this last post of the series, I want to encourage you to see Writers’ Block as something that allows you to find out more about you. To find your hidden worries, beliefs and family system mix-ups. Something that will make you a better author, and possibly a better person in the long run.

Because once you are aware of what’s going on below the surface, you can actually do something about it. You can shift beliefs, transform limiting thoughts, and rebalance your family system. You can change your life, and sometimes, even that of others.

And it’s not even difficult or hard. Continue reading

Writers’ Block – Entanglement

Entanglement

Entanglement

Entanglements are some of the strangest effects within family system dynamics. They happen when a family member’s fate is not recognized and honored by the other family members. That fate is often tragic or traumatic – because only strong emotions leave a trace in the family system energy.

Because of this void, a certain unbalanced energy in the family system, another family member “jumps in” and gets entangled with the disregarded family member and their fate. This is not a free, conscious choice, and it usually happens without the affected family member even realizing what is going on.

This is actually typical for family systems. They don’t “care” about individual members, because balance is more important. It is all about the energy inside that system.

Here’s an example of how this kind of entanglement can look for a writer: Continue reading

Writers’ Block – Fame is Dangerous

Ancestral Energy

Ancestral Energy

Just the other day, I did some work on an ancestral line of my own, helped by a tapping friend. And while this might not strictly be a family system issue, it is quite possible that family rules are anchored in something that happened to one or more of your ancestors.

Yes, this is a bit woo woo.

On the other hand, I’ve seen this often enough with clients, and I have also seen the changes that happened when this kind of thing gets released. In fact, I experienced this quite vividly myself.

So what do I mean with this ancestral thing?

One way of having ancestral warnings from actual experience enter the family system is via a strict family rule. We can find those patterns by looking closely at family members and their life decisions.

The rule might be: Avoid Fame AT ALL COST.

Straight road to Writers’ Block, obviously, since writers need at least some publicity in order to be successful. And why even finish a book if being published and getting known is so dangerous? Continue reading

Writers’ Block – Royalties are not Safe

Book income isn't safe

Book income isn’t safe.

The rules in our family system have often been created from experiences in the past, and then handed down through generations. More often than not, they are never challenged.

A number of those rules revolve around safety, and how to stay safe. And that includes how to create a safe income for your living.

Now, being a writer these days, with all the changes in the publishing landscape, means that you have to be an entrepreneur. Or a freelancer. You’re basically running a small, or not so small business, whether you like it or not. That’s true even if you’re traditionally published – because the publishers no longer do the marketing. You’re on your own there, and your success depends on your skills and efforts.

Now, if you’re traditionally published, money comes in about twice a year.  If you’re self-published, using Amazon and other resellers, money comes in every month, which does make things a little easier.

Either way, however, the income will be somewhat unpredictable. Continue reading
