The Publishing Author’s Mindset – Finding a Publisher

Looking for a publisher

Looking for a publisher

Let’s assume you have decided that your novel is good enough, and you want to find a traditional publisher for it.

That’s an awesome step. Congratulations.

You just got much closer to being a real author. Because getting your book out there for readers to purchase and enjoy is an integral part of being an author. No matter how you achieve that step, it’s essential.

I’ll get to self-publishing later in this series. I’m starting with the traditional way because there are still authors who prefer this. I’ll just mention here that I personally believe self-publishing is the faster, more efficient and more profitable way these days, but I don’t want to exclude anyone. And honestly, if you want to be traditionally published, you definitely need a strong mindset…

How does one find a publisher?

The sad truth is that most well-known publishers don’t accept submissions from just anyone. They rely on agents to preselect the manuscripts they receive (and they still receive enough of them!). I’ll get to agents next week. But even so, it could be worth a try.

On the other hand, there are many small(er) publishers that do accept direct submissions. But you don’t want to just send your manuscript to just anyone. In addition, publishers really don’t like multiple submission – meaning that you shouldn’t submit your manuscript to several publishers at the same time. Continue reading

The Publishing Author’s Mindset – Introduction

Getting published

Get that book out

I’m starting a new blog series on all the blocks and pitfalls of mindset during the process of publishing your book – because it is a central topic destined to create such blocks, fears and nightmares for any author.

In the next three months, I’m going to work through the individual steps of getting published and the specific mindset problems that could come up with those. Of course, there will be tapping suggestions, as usual, and a tapping round in my newsletter to help you release those mindset problems.

Now, let’s get started on the MINDSET OF GETTING PUBLISHED.

It seems as if this should be the number one goal of all writers. And maybe it is. But it’s also the number one horror for most writers.

Because it means one thing: Your book will get visible.

People will be able to read it. And they will develop an opinion about it. Not all of them will keep it to themselves, either. They’ll write reviews. They’ll tell their friends. Continue reading

NaNoWriMo Special – What now?

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

NaNo is over.

The rush is over.

The forced writing is over.

And the divine inspiration and mad sprints are over.

What remains might be a sense of accomplishment and… exhaustion.

That’s totally okay. Acknowledge both. Celebrate. Get some rest.

But what comes next?

Thing is, in November, you built up momentum. You learned that you can write, even if it gets rough. You WROTE.

And that’s a good thing to carry over into December and beyond.

So don’t stop writing. Continue reading

NaNoWriMo Special – The Showdown

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

We’re in the last week of NaNoWriMo, and it is time for the showdown.

You’ve been writing for three weeks now. You have gone through hell and heaven both while dealing with your story. You gained a lot of experience.

And so have your characters.

You have grown during this journey. You have overcome challenges, you’ve vanquished plot holes, you have slogged through inspirational deserts, and you have been flying high on your imagination.

So have your characters.

But now, it all comes down to the finishing line. The villains are lined up. The plot lines are weaving together.  The secrets have been found out. The story holds its breath.

Showdown.

The final challenge: Thanksgiving. Continue reading

NaNoWriMo Special – The Bad Guys

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

Last week we talked about characters in general, but this week, we’ll talk about a special kind of character: the villain.

The bad guy or gal. The nasty person that’s in our hero’s way.

And it’s so easy to fall into those common supervillain tropes and make the villain cardboard nasty, stupid and psychotic. Here’s a good resource of things your villain should avoid: Peter’s Evil Overlord List (Oldie but Goodie).

But if you really think about it, the villain is simply another character. He or she simply happen to oppose our good, handsome or beautiful lead.

Imagine one of those “playgrounds” for miniature roleplaying, set up on a table you can walk around.

You can see the terrain, all the individual pieces of an army sorted and planted into their places, the orks, trolls, humans, maybe battlemachines. You’re standing on the side of the yellow ones, and you admire the smart battleline and how well they are arranged to take advantage of the hill on one side of the table. Yes, this lady knows her stuff.

That’s your hero. Continue reading

NaNoWriMo Special – Characters

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

Today is Day 10 of NaNoWriMo.

That means you should be at ~16,000 words, and that is already pretty deep inside your story. In fact, you should be clearly beyond the introduction of your characters and stuff should be happening to them, fast and furious.

Have you thought about your characters?

What makes them tick?
What is their biggest fear and their biggest joy?
What was the worst day in their lives?
What do they dream of for the future?

If you can answer these questions, you already know a lot about them.

And if you know those answers, you know some of the challenges they must face.

But why challenge the characters? Continue reading

NaNoWriMo Special – No Plot! Arghhh!

National Novel Writing Month

NaNoWriMo

When NaNoWriMo took off, Chris Baty, who instigated it, wrote a book called “No Plot, No Problem”. In fact, it is lying on my desk right now.

Now, most authors fall somewhere on the spectrum that has plotters on one and pantsers (flying by the seat of your pants) on the other. Most likely, there is a normal distribution on that spectrum, meaning that most writers plot somewhat and pants their writing somewhat.

But this post is not about defining where you are on that spectrum, nor will I choose sides. Every writers creates their own method and style of writing, and develops it into a process.

That’s how it goes. None is better than the other, but one might fit you better than the other.

NaNo is an awesome way to find out.

But I still have no plot! Continue reading
